7 Signs Your Chimney Needs Attention Right Now

Any one of these means it's time for an inspection — most chimney fires and carbon monoxide events start with a symptom a homeowner noticed and ignored.

  • Smoke rolling into the roomA blocked flue, closed damper or bad draft — and a carbon monoxide risk.
  • Crumbling or missing mortarFreeze-thaw damage. Water is already getting behind the brick.
  • White staining (efflorescence)Salt pushed out by moisture trapped inside the masonry.
  • Ceiling or wall stains near the chimneyFailed flashing, a cracked crown, or a missing chimney cap.
  • Shiny black tar inside the flueGlazed creosote — the most flammable stage. Stop burning and call.
  • Brick chips in the flower bedSpalling face brick. The stack is shedding and needs repair.
  • You can't remember the last sweepIf it's been more than a year, you're overdue in a Minnesota climate.

What Twin Cities Homeowners Say

Three recent jobs, in the customers' own words.

”

We had them install a new chimney cap after our old one started rusting and letting water in. They came out quickly, checked everything over, and recommended a good replacement without trying to sell us anything extra. The installation was done neatly and didn't take long. Everything looks great, and we've already had some heavy rain with no more water coming in.

I contacted this company because the brickwork around our fireplace was starting to crack and look pretty rough. They repaired the damaged areas and did an excellent job matching the existing brick and mortar. The crew was friendly, respectful of our home, and kept the work area clean. The fireplace looks so much better now, and you can barely tell where the repairs were made.

We needed our chimney inspected after buying an older home, and I'm glad we called these guys. The technician took his time checking the chimney and fireplace and explained everything he found in a way that was easy to understand. He answered all of our questions and never made us feel rushed. The whole appointment went smoothly, and we feel much better about using our fireplace now.

Straight Answers

Minneapolis Chimney Questions, Answered

How much does a chimney inspection cost in Minneapolis?

Our full chimney inspection is free — the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue and all exterior masonry, checked by a trained technician who then explains what he found in plain English. No charge, no obligation. If you need the findings in writing — for a home sale, an insurer or your own records — a documented condition report with photos is $149, prepared only on request.

How often should a chimney be swept in Minnesota?

Inspect annually, sweep whenever creosote reaches roughly 1/8 inch. With our long heating season, most wood-burning households need a sweep once a year and heavy burners sometimes twice. Gas and oil appliance flues need an annual check too — blockages there vent carbon monoxide, not smoke, so you get no warning.

Do you fix chimney leaks and water damage?

Yes, and it's one of our most requested repairs. Twin Cities chimney leaks almost always trace back to a cracked crown, failed flashing, spalling brick or a missing cap after repeated freeze-thaw cycles. We locate the actual water entry point, then repair the crown, replace flashing, tuckpoint the joints and apply a breathable waterproofing that lets the masonry dry out.

What is tuckpointing, and does my chimney need it?

Tuckpointing means grinding out deteriorated mortar joints and repacking them with fresh, color-matched mortar. If mortar crumbles under a key, is recessed more than about 1/4 inch, or you're finding sand and brick chips at the base of the chimney, it's time. Tuckpointing now costs a fraction of a rebuild later.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — licensed, bonded and fully insured, with background-checked technicians. Ask and we'll send you our certificate of insurance before we schedule the work. Never let anyone on your roof who won't do the same.

How long does an appointment take, and will it make a mess?

A standard sweep and inspection runs 60 to 90 minutes. We lay drop cloths, seal the fireplace opening and run sealed HEPA vacuums the entire time. Soot stays in the machine, not on your carpet.

Can you inspect a chimney for a home sale or purchase?

Absolutely. Real estate transactions call for a Level 2 inspection, which includes camera scanning of the flue interior. You get a documented report suitable for negotiation, usually within 24 hours of the visit.

Do you handle urgent jobs?

Yes — urgent calls jump the queue. If you've had a chimney fire, smell smoke in the house, hear an animal in the flue or your chimney is visibly leaning, stop using the fireplace and call (651) 627-8444 during business hours, Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm. If there is an active fire or you suspect carbon monoxide, leave the house and call 911 first.
